Worship Themes, Ideas Offered In Bible Study

To help worship leaders and planners reflect deeply on the theology and mechanics of worship and worship preparation, the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship, which promotes Christian worship and worship renewal, has prepared a 12-week Bible study for leadership teams, clergy associations, seminary students and judicatory officials designed to create occasions to think and talk about the mechanics of worship preparation. Each lesson begins with biblical warrants, proceeds to an examination of some element of worship and worship preparation, offers discussion-starting questions, and provides links to supplemental reading. (Note: because this study was prepared by scholars and church people of a particular tradition, lesson 3 focuses explicitly on what they understand is the unique contribution of Reformed worship. Christians from other traditions will likely agree with its basic message, but some more hierarchical denominations might disagree at points.) Study topics include: reasons for good worship; who participates in worship (seen and unseen); the uniqueness of Reformed worship; the pattern of a worship service; why and how to write a congregational worship statement; issues in worship renewal; collaborative worship planning; worship as listening and responding; worship as covenant renewal; the pattern of the Christian Year; and why and how to periodically take stock of the congregation’s worship life.
