Who Uses Social Media?

Two studies provide insight into who is using social media in the larger culture and who is using those tools in religious circles. A 2010 survey by Lifeway Research indicated that 47 percent of churches actively use Facebook, but 40 percent of churches do not use any social networking tools. Churches hoping to connect with youth and young adults through social network venues need to understand the results of the extensive 2009 Pew Research survey, “Social Media and Young Adults,” which documents the shift away from Facebook among younger cohorts and indicates where they are going. Information about the use of social media is available from the New Media Project.
