What Search Committees Want

Are you a male, under 40 years old, and married to a nonworking woman who volunteers on church committees? If so, churches are looking for you to lead their congregation. However, the average seminary graduate today is already in his or her 40s. In the United Church of Christ, the average pastor is 57 years old. In the United Methodist Church, one-third of pastors are single and half of current Methodist seminarians are female. And there are other ways search committee desires are at odds with demographic realities and denominational emphases.
