What is the Evangelical Lutheran Church?

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America was formed in 1988, when the Lutheran Church in America, The Association of Evangelical Lutheran Churches and the American Lutheran Church merged. Combined, the three branches have more than 10,000 churches with an average of 439 members per congregation, for a total membership of more than 4,500,000 (in 2014). To help members and nonmembers find information on the Evangelical Lutheran Church In America (ELCA), the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship, an institute dedicated to promoting and supporting the renewal of Christian worship along Reformed lines, has prepared a web page linking to official documents, key worship resources and other background and statistical material and sources about the denomination. Two other resources that tangentially relate to this topic might also be of interest: “Religious Adherence Influences Lifestyle and Experience” explores an economic interpretation of religious affiliation — that is, how different religious teachings and practices influence behavior and produce varying life outcomes. “The Impact of an Evangelical Worldview on Parenting and Family Life” identifies core differences in how Evangelicals engage in married life and parent their offspring, and correlates outcomes in their adult children. Also, see our “Best Resources to Research Cultural Trends.”
