The Role of Service in Family Faith Formation

A key element in the building and forming of faith is service to others. The Center for Congregations, an Indianapolis center that helps Indiana congregations meet their challenges and opportunities, hosted a workshop by family scholar Diana Garland. Garland's research indicates that Christian families gain strength by living the teaching of Jesus with one another and in service to others. The center invited her to help congregational leaders in their planning by producing a set of resources to engage families in Christian service. Relatedly, in another workshop, Fuller Youth Institute director Kara Powell explored ways to make faith lessons stick with youth and young adults, as well as in worship, adult education and general congregational life. She also provided a set of resources to promote "sticky faith."  For more resources to support youth, read our article, "Best Resources on Youth and Youth Programming for Congregations."
