Psalms Encourage Family Faith Formation

When all ages interact together with the Psalms, they develop a common language for life together with God. The power of the Psalms is that they can provide language children can use their whole lives "when they feel like singing a praise chorus or when their world has been shattered. The Psalms [also] demonstrate how to tell God we're sorry or ask God for help," according to Laura and Bob Keeley, directors of children's ministries at Fourteenth Street Christian Reformed Church in Michigan, and authors of the free online devotional book, "Psalms for Families." In an article written with Joan Huyser-Honig for the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship, an organization devoted to worship renewal, the Keeley's provide examples of age-appropriate ways to engage family members with Psalms, offer links to related Institute feature articles, link to their free online book and other online resources, and provide a set of discussion questions to help church staff and study groups explore the ideas and resources provided in the article.
