Impacting the neighborhood around your church

Congregations have an enormous impact on their surrounding communities by providing public ministry, neighborhood programs, space availability and more, says director of Partners for Sacred Spaces Elizabeth Terry. Properly understanding your sacred space as a community asset can help you attract outside interest in preserving your building, and draw people to your church, Terry told participants at a recent workshop sponsored by the Indianapolis Center for Congregations, an organization dedicated to helping strengthen Indiana congregations. The Center for Congregations offers a free downloadable PDF that includes a list of resources recommended by Terry to help leaders strengthen the relationship between churches and neighborhoods, work together to attract new partners and resources, and understand the importance of their congregations in their local communities.
