Faith Communities Respond to the Syrian Refugee Crisis

By the beginning of 2014, almost 2.5 million Syrians had fled the ongoing civil war in their home country, many to neighboring Jordan, where the influx has produced economic and infrastructure stress. The United Nations, international aid agencies, and faith-based groups have mobilized to help the displaced Syrian people. In a 12-minute video news story prepared for Religion & Ethics Newsweekly, a source for cutting edge reporting at the intersection of faith and society, correspondent Kim Lawton explored the unique contribution of faith-based organizations: providing the human touch. In a fluid situation in which more than 70 percent of refugees are not in camps, but scattered across Jordanian cities where they are forbidden to work, the task of providing material and nonmaterial aid is complex and difficult. However, many Jordanian groups work with foreign aid organizations, citing the country's long cultural and religious heritage of welcoming foreigners.
