Faith and the younger generation: what the scholars say

A significant body of books, edited volumes and articles by scholars working at the intersection of youth and religion has recently emerged, centering on the role of theology, spirituality and faith formation in the practice of youth ministry. In reviewing the abundance of literature, research and commentary on the topic from 1999 to 2010, Joyce Ann Mercer of Virginia Theological Seminary, offers five common insights found most often. What does faith have to do with the lives of young people? Scholars responded and Mercer summarizes the findings for Resources for American Christianity, a source for information and reflection on the impacts, trends and trajectories of Christianity in American society.
