Design Guidelines for Church Renovations

Church architecture and landscaping make a significant difference in how well a church welcomes visitors. When members enter through side doors that open into labyrinthine corridors that lead to the sanctuary, when church landscaping hides the building, or when a church seems cut off by its imposing structure, front yard parking lot, or black iron fencing, community members and potential visitors do not get a sense of accessibility or welcome. Joan Huyser-Honig  lays out 10 key design tips to help churches become good neighbors and indicate their interest in their community. Read “Design Guidelines for Church Renovation,”  housed on the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship website. Also see the companion article, “Renovating Churches to Build a Sense of Community.”
