Creative religious ed: Using bible stories to teach life lessons

A key challenge for clergy is finding ways to make Scripture relevant to everyday life. How does the Bible come alive in the ordinariness of individual experience? In an article prepared for Faith & Leadership, an online magazine from Leadership Education at Duke Divinity School, the Rev. Darriel Harris reflects on his experience in the South Sudan, where he discovered the power of telling biblical stories to teach people about health and safety practices, and mutual responsibility. The stories he recounts raise the question: How might biblical stories inform life in your faith community?

The South Sudanese culture of storytelling taught an American pastor how to use Bible stories to teach and to delight.
