Church growth studies show trends in worship numbers

This resource provides links to three recent scholarly national studies that focus on church growth and decline.

The Faith Communities Today study is the largest survey of congregations ever conducted in the United States, with national research done in 2000, 2005, 2008 and 2010.

The U.S. Congregational Life Survey Project is the largest and most representative profile of worshippers and their congregations ever developed in the U.S. It is part of an international congregational study project across several time periods.

The National Congregations Study was the first religious study to use an innovative sampling method to generate a high quality, nationally representative sample of congregations.  It has three waves to the continuing study across a decade of time.

The Hartford Institute for Religion Research at Hartford Seminary offers more information about these studies and others.
