Church Challenges at the Start of the 21st Century

There are many challenges facing Christian churches at the beginning of the 21st century. The four specific challenges addressed in this article are perennial, but take varying forms over time. They are: maintaining a membership base, securing adequate financial resources, recruiting talented clergy leaders, and finding an appropriate balance between serving members and serving the public. Using data from the 1998 National Congregations Study, director Mark Chaves of Duke University analyzes the issues.
