Avoid Common Pitfalls When Surveying Your Congregation

Congregations looking to revitalize themselves and engage their congregants often initiate surveys and questionnaires but, one pastor warns, these types of surveys aren’t a one-size-fits-all way to assess a community. Even the well-regarded surveys wont necessarily generate information or result in the goal your church is hoping for, says former pastor Wendy McCormick. McCormick, an office director for the Center for Congregations, an Indiana organization that seeks to support and strengthen congregations, advises faith communities to do two things before they begin to assess themselves: Define what type of information theyre looking for, and know what theyll do with the information once the survey is completed. Learn when and how to conduct an effective parish-wide survey — and how not to conduct one!
