Lilly Endowment Grant Supports Episcopal Church

Lilly Endowment Grant Supports Episcopal Church

The Episcopal Church has an important partner as it responds to shifts in the religious landscape. In 2018, the Lilly Endowment Inc., a private philanthropic foundation based in Indianapolis, awarded nearly $4.5 million in grants to launch or strengthen programs that help pastoral leaders thrive in their ministry with congregations. And these grants are only the latest in a long history of support from the religion division of the foundation, whose mission is to deepen and enrich the religious lives of American Christians.

A huge online following reflects the growing fame of the Greenleaf pastor, the Rev. William Barber. A passionate preacher, anti-poverty activist, and civil rights leader, Barber has emerged as perhaps the most important figure in progressive U.S. Christianity, even while serving his small local congregation. This month, he was one of 25 Americans to be awarded a coveted MacArthur "Genius Grant," with a no-strings-attached stipend of $625,000 over five years.

Spaciousness Mindfuloness

Spaciousness Mindfuloness

A few years ago, when Naomi Shihab Nye was teaching in Japan, one of her students introduced her to the concept of yutori. Though the word is usually associated with an education policy calling for reduced hours and content in Japan’s primary school curriculum, I liked how Naomi and her student discussed it in a more expansive sense:

“It’s a kind of living with spaciousness. For example, it’s leaving early enough to get somewhere so that you know you’re going to arrive early, so when you get there, you have time to look around.”

78 institutions nationwide awarded grants ranging from $31,000 to $1 million
