In this powerful sabbatical reflection, Pastor Tom Hux recounts his history with South African pastor Tshenuwani Simon Farisani, a one-time political prisoner who escaped to California. The two met when then-seminary student Hux served as a childcare provider and unofficial bodyguard for Farisani’s children. Farisani is now a very powerful political figure in his province in South Africa and, through a Clergy Renewal Grant provided by the Lilly Endowment, Hux was able to rekindle his relationship by taking his family to South Africa to visit his old friend and see the sites of so much apartheid and anti-apartheid activity. In recounting this journey, and a second journey to England to visit the founding church of the Alpha Course, Hux offers testimony of the power of God to open doors and guide lives.
