Applying for Grants: The Basics of Faculty Grant Proposals

What makes for a solid grant proposal? Although most faculty are competent at writing in the academic genres of their field of study, grant-writing is a separate genre, with a distinct audience. Therefore, writing mastery in an academic field does not translate into success as a writer of grant applications. Because effective communication always entails writing for one’s audience, understanding the proposal’s audience and the context in which it will be read is essential to a grant-writer’s success. To help faculty understand their audience, the Faculty Resource Center of the Association of Theological Schools, a membership organization that provides accreditation services and promotes best practices in schools of theology, has published a downloadable manual on writing successful grants for theology school faculty to guide applicants through the process of understanding and addressing the viewpoint and concerns of grant-making committees.
