Evangelical Racial/Ethnic Students are Fastest-Growing Seminary Cohort

Evangelical seminary students make up 63 percent of all seminary enrollment although evangelical schools of theology constitute just 42 percent of all schools of theology, according to data compiled by The Association of Theological Schools. As that theological trend has grown, the populations of non-white students has also grown, reflecting the ecclesial commitments of contemporary students. Some 80 percent of Asian students enroll in evangelical Protestant schools, along with 64 percent of Hispanics and 49 percent of blacks. Meanwhile, white student matriculation has dropped from 47,224 in 1992 to 41,431 in 2012, a 12 percent decline. These current trends in seminary enrollment reflect the changing nature of North American populations, particularly in the United States.
