Reaction to the UN Report on Catholic Priests' Child Abuse

In light of the United Nations 2014 accusations that the Catholic Church systematically put the protection of the Church's reputation over the wellbeing of children who were sexually abused by priests, Religion & Ethics Newsweekly, a source for cutting edge reporting and analysis of national and international events in the religious world, explored the controversy in a 5-minute news video interview with Father Tom Reese, an expert on the Vatican and a senior analyst at the National Catholic Reporter. Correspondent Kim Lawton and host Bob Abernethy questioned Fr. Reese on the steps the Vatican is and is not taking to eradicate child sexual abuse by priests. Criticism of Pope Francis includes his failure so far to fire priests who have committed predatory acts, or bishops guilty of covering up abuses, and his failure to hold best practices training for bishops to help ensure against future misbehaviors. Of concern is whether Francis will make it clear by both word and deed that his administration will continue the zero tolerance policies instituted by Pope Benedict in the last two years of his papacy. For more on the Catholic Church sex abuse scandal and its fallout, see the article, "Looking back — and forth — in anger," on the website of the Association of Religion Data Archives, a repository for data sets from high quality surveys on religion in the U.S. and around the world. The article includes a link to survey questions that gauge the public's response to the Catholic clergy sex abuse scandal over time.
