Faith and youth: inspiration for religious educators

Concern for the religious lives of young people has taken many forms over the centuries. The post-modern era reveals continuity in the needs of children and youth and change in the context within which faith is formed. Karen Marie Yust of Union Seminary-Presbyterian School of Christian Education in Richmond, Virginia, has reviewed the books on the topic and edited volumes of 24 scholars and collaborations produced since 2000.

In a 20-page report, she details the role of faith in the lives of children. Her findings are available as a free download on Resources for American Christianity, a website that assists Christian leaders and others to better understand the impact, trends and trajectories of Christianity in American society. She concludes that children must be part of a community that practices the stories it teaches with the passion born of experience with God’s life-giving relationship with the world. Extended bibliography is included.
