Best Sources for Institutional Profiles of Schools of Theological Education

Schools that provide theological education offer a range of programs, degrees and specialties. Insights Into Religion works with organizations across that country that accredit, evaluate and provide programs to Christian and Jewish schools of theology. The information may also be helpful to students seeking to find a school that's right for them.

The Association of Theological Schools is a membership organization of more than 260 graduate schools that conduct professional and academic degree programs to prepare students for the practice of ministry and for teaching and research in the theological disciplines. Its Commission on Accrediting assures that schools and their programs meet accreditation standards. As part of its mission, ATS collects and maintains annual reports on each member school’s enrollment, faculty composition and compensation, institutional development and finances, degree programs and courses of study. Among the site’s resources is a database of member institutions. Each listing provides a brief overview of key characteristics and a link to the school’s website. You may also search for schools by location, degree and other criteria.

ATS also administers questionnaires to theology students prior to entering and after graduating from member schools and offers the findings — based on surveys of more than 70,000 theology students and alumni — to member institutions and students preparing for ministry.

The Lilly Fellows Program in Humanities and the Arts at Valparaiso University seeks to strengthen the quality and shape the character of church-related institutions of higher learning through fellowships for young scholars who are exploring vocations in church-related higher education. The program maintains a directory of 96 participating schools of religious education.

The Center for the Study of Theological Education at Auburn Seminary provides lists of seminaries and notable programs that offer multifaith education to help equip future leaders to lead in a multifaith world.

Prospective students may find the “Guide to Theological Education,” produced by The Forum for Theological Exploration, a helpful resource with insight on how to explore the field of theological education, how to select an appropriate school, how to apply, strategies to pay for graduate study, and more. Also, don't overlook FTE's Fund Finder, which lists sources of financial support beyond FTE.
