Learning Pastoral Imagination  [PDF} Learning Pastoral Imagination, A Five-Year Report On How New Ministers Learn in Practice by Christian A.B. Scharen and Eileen R. Campbell-Reed (Winter 2016) Auburn Theological Seminary. Understanding ministry today is far from a self-evident exercise. Is it a calling? A professional role? A particular kind of identity conferred through licensing or ordination? How is ministry like other professions? How is it unique? How is preparation for ministry different across theological traditions and denominations? What conditions are needed to prepare ministers for the wise practice of ministry? How are schools, classes, and teachers in theological education getting it right? What changes are needed in the schools and curricula of theological education in order to prepare ministers for their work at the intersections of human suffering and divine redemption? How can ministers be prepared for the complexity of mission and ministry today, rather than being inducted into patterns of ministry prevalent in eras now long past?

The Five Most Common Preaching Mistakes From The Academy Of Preaching And Celebration

As the world moves solidly into the technological age, consumers increasingly expect high “production value” in their consumed content. That expectation permeates all aspects of life, including the church, where high-quality, effective preaching is in demand. Homiletics professor Frank A. Thomas of the Academy of Preaching and Celebration and Christian Theological Seminary notes that some people have an “innate gift for the task.” However, “for the rest of us, high-quality and effective preaching can be achieved with and by method.”

In a series of five videos, Thomas explores common preaching preparation and delivery errors and makes suggestions on how to function more powerfully in each area. Topics include sermon structure, effective, transitional endings, proper use of “bad news,” keeping the Gospel front and center, and immersion in Scripture. Each video runs 3 to 4 minutes, and points to a chapter in Thomas’ book, “The Like to Never Quit Praisin’ God: The Role of Celebration in Preaching.” For more on how to prepare a good sermon, see our feature article, “The Challenges of Writing a Sermon and Tips for Sermon Preparation.”

The Academy Of Preaching And Celebration seeks to generate excellence in preaching and worship by exploring the genius of the African-American tradition to transform the church and world through deepened faith and biblical practice

Applying Positive Deviance, a Resource from the Center for Congregations

What if there was a way to solve your congregation’s most pressing problem? What if an approach exists that will solve something that was intractable, unmovable, resistant to all your efforts? Would you be interested? Or would you be hesitant, possibly suspicious? There is an approach that can help you solve an arduous challenge, and the solution already exists in your community. This approach has been used in many spheres of life, including nutrition, health care and education. Yet it hasn’t been translated to spiritual life or the flourishing of congregations. This document will introduce you to the untapped approach called positive deviance. http://thecrg.org/content/files/Positive-Deviance.pdf

Faith Communities Today Sermon Resources

Faith Communities Today is the public dissemination effort of a group of researchers and religious leaders who were responsible for, in 2000, the largest survey ever of congregations. 2015 National Survey Report American churches, synagogues and other faith communities are changing. This recent report describes the key findings from the 2015 national survey of churches and other religious communities in the United States.  It offers a profile of congregational life and presents a comprehensive look at the trends across 15 years of survey findings.

The Effect of Seminary Education on The Content of Sermons "Education for religious leaders provides a unique challenge. Higher education, and particularly seminary Master’s and post-Master’s education, seems to have a noticeable effect on the style of sermon presentation. The references such pastors use in their sermon are more likely to be drawn from literature and news events. At the same time, seminary graduates are more likely to engage in ecumenical worship and community social ministries. However, broad educational experience in the congregation, and perhaps even seminary education, seems to have a negative impact on many basic religious values. Churches served by seminary graduates are less likely to maintain traditional religious-moral values and also are less likely to be committed to preserving denominational heritage. Further, clergy with a seminary education are no more likely than other clergy to be in congregations that have a strong social justice orientation and are very much less likely to be in congregations that deal openly with conflict and disagreement."

The Forum For Theological Exploration (FTE) Guide to Theological Education  The Forum For Theological Exploration's (FTE) mission is to culticate diverse young adults to be faithful, wise, and courageous leaders for the church and academy. “Theological education is a journey of the heart, soul, mind and strength into the life of God and the healing of the world.”As you read The FTE Guide to Theological Education, our hope is that you will find the information in the following pages helpful as you discern your next steps in pursuing a graduate theological degree toward preparing for ministry.

7 Insights on Leadership the World Needs Now  We know that communities everywhere need inspired leaders to shape a hopeful future. But can we actually create the conditions in which faithful, wise and courageous leaders will thrive? We believe the answer is “yes.” And doing God’s work in the world depends on it. Over 18 months in seven cities with 200 conversation partners, FTE explored three questions: What are the leadership questions you wrestle with in your context? What kinds of leaders does the world need from the church today? What attributes must these leaders have to make a difference in the world? The conversation continues. So does action. What do these seven insights inspire you to do? We invite you to share your ideas in the comment box. Together, let’s name seven steps to foster faithful leadership that the world needs now.

Equipping Vocational Discovery FTE strives to equip the next generation of leaders who are inspired to do God’s workin the world through his or her own church or academic community. With support, diverse young people can enliven their vocational pursuit, becoming intellectually and spiritually whole leaders. We provide resources created to meet the unique needs of those who are seeking their purpose, passion and call, and the partners who nurture them on their journey.
