Governing an Effective Congregation

Congregations that have been most effective at moving from thinking strategically to acting strategically have boards that are more interested in governing than managing. Governing boards think about identity, expectations, results and outcomes. Managing boards worry about details. The Center for Congregations, which hosts workshops and provides resources to strengthen congregations, offers an article about strategic governance that can help explain the difference between a "governing" board and a "managing" board, and how these have an impact on congregational vitality. Helpful resources are also listed.
