Ethnic Traditionalism vs. Civic Involvement in North American Eastern Orthodoxy

In contemporary America the Orthodox face two temptations. One is to capitulate to the relativistic U.S. culture so the church becomes just another social club. The other is to forget that the divine truth is not a private possession of the Orthodox, but saves the entire world. Consequently, hiding it under a bushel of ethnic cultures and prejudices will result in appropriate divine judgment. This paper addresses those twin temptations, drawing on the 2000-2002 study of Eastern Orthodoxy in North America.
