Christian Classics Ethereal Library

The Christian Classics Ethereal Library is a free searchable digital library of hundreds of classic Christian books — with volumes continually being added. The mission of the Christian Classics Ethereal Library is to build up the church by making classic Christian literature widely available and promoting its use for edification and study by interested Christians, seekers and scholars. The CCEL accomplishes this by selecting, collecting, distributing and promoting valuable literature online and through other media.

In addition, CCEL also hosts online study groups and book discussion forums for people wishing to discuss authors and books or study religious texts with an online community. More than 1,000 titles from a variety of faith traditions are currently available to download or read on a computer screen or mobile device. CCEL’s recommended reading list includes religious classics like St. Augustine’s Confessions; John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress; and The Autobiography of George Fox, the founder of the Society of Friends.

Founded by Harry Plantinga in 1993, the CCEL also developed and maintains Hymnary.org, a searchable hymn database of more than a million songs; both are located at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where Plantinga is a professor of computer science. Visitors also use the library to conduct research, read daily Bible passages and commentary, and browse (free!) classic literary offerings.
